Phonogram Fun FAQ
Straight answers about price, devices, ages, accents, offline use and privacy.
What devices does Phonogram Fun run on?
Phonogram Fun runs on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. On iPad it is a native app with a landscape layout. It also works on Chromebooks that can run Android apps from Google Play. It is not a web app, so there is no browser version.
Download it from the App Store, where it is listed as "Kids Spelling: Phonogram Fun", or from Google Play, where it is listed as "Phonogram Fun: Kids Spelling".
How much does Phonogram Fun cost?
Phonogram Fun is free to download. Phonogram Fun Plus, which unlocks everything, costs:
- Australia: AUD $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year (save 33%)
- United Kingdom: £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year
- United States: US $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year
Prices in other countries are set by the App Store or Google Play and shown in the app before you subscribe. There are no ads.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Phonogram Fun Plus starts with a 7-day free trial. If you cancel before the trial ends, you are not charged.
What is free in Phonogram Fun?
The free version includes one mission a day, the full 70-phonogram chart with audio, Sound Play and the word analyser. It does not expire. Phonogram Fun Plus unlocks everything else, with unlimited practice.
Can I share one subscription with my family?
On iPhone and iPad, yes. Family Sharing is enabled, so one Phonogram Fun Plus subscription can be shared with the people in your Apple Family Sharing group. On Android, the subscription works on every device signed in to the same Google account.
What ages is Phonogram Fun for?
Phonogram Fun is designed for children aged 4 to 12. The sweet spot is Year 1 (around age 6 to 7), when weekly spelling lists and the phonics check arrive. Four- and five-year-olds usually start with the phonogram chart, flash cards and Sound Play. See who Phonogram Fun is for for more detail.
Which school years and curricula does it suit?
In Australia it suits Prep, Kindy or Foundation through to Year 6. In England it suits Reception through to Year 6, and it includes the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words from the English national curriculum. The built-in word lists follow Australian and British school years.
Families in the United States can use it from kindergarten to grade 6 (in the US the phonics focus is usually grade 1), and the 70 phonograms work the same way for American children. The built-in lists are Australian and British, though, so US families mostly scan their own school list, and spelling follows Australian or British conventions (colour, not color).
Which accents and spellings does it use?
You can choose an Australian English or a British English voice. Spelling follows Australian and British conventions (en-AU and en-GB). There is no American voice.
Does Phonogram Fun work offline?
Mostly. The phonogram chart, flash cards, built-in word lists, phonics check papers, and Word Climb on lists you have already saved all work without an internet connection.
Scanning a new spelling list and generating a new story need an internet connection, because they use an online service to read the photo and write the story.
Is Phonogram Fun safe and private for children?
Yes. There are no ads and no tracking SDKs, and no account is needed. Adding your child's first name is optional, and the name stays on the device. Photos of spelling lists are sent to an online service only to pull out the words, and are not stored. Full details are in the privacy policy.
How does the spelling-list scan work?
Take a photo of the list: a homework sheet, a school handout or your own handwriting. The app sends the photo to an online service that reads the words, then shows you the list so you can fix or add words before you start. You can also type the words in. Once saved, the list becomes Word Climb, a Fill the Gaps story, dictation and phonogram practice.
What is in the Phonics Check section?
It contains 12 real past Phonics Screening Check papers from England (2012 to 2019 and 2022 to 2025), each with 40 real and alien (made-up) words, read in an Australian or British voice. A parent runs a paper in about five minutes: the child reads each word aloud, the parent taps ✓ or ✗, and the result screen shows which phonograms to work on.
A Readiness Map shows all 70 phonograms, coloured from light to dark green as your child gets them right. The papers are Crown copyright, reused under the Open Government Licence. Read more in our guides to the UK Phonics Screening Check and the Year 1 Phonics Check in Australia.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by the App Store or Google Play, not by us. On iPhone or iPad go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions. On Android open Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. Step-by-step help is on the support page.
Does Phonogram Fun replace a tutor?
No. It gives children short, structured daily practice on the sounds behind their spelling words, and shows parents which sounds need work. Many families use it between tutoring sessions or instead of nightly worksheets, but a tutor or teacher can adapt to a child in ways an app cannot.
Is Phonogram Fun good for children with dyslexia?
Phonogram Fun is a structured, sounds-first phonics tool, and many families use it alongside specialist support for dyslexia. It is not a diagnosis, an assessment or a therapy, and it does not replace a speech pathologist, an educational psychologist or a specialist tutor. If you are worried about your child's reading, talk to their teacher or a qualified professional.
Does Phonogram Fun use the Spalding method?
Phonogram Fun is built on the 70 Spalding phonograms, taught in Spalding order. It is an independent app and is not affiliated with Spalding Education International.
