Ages 4 to 12

Who Phonogram Fun is for

Honest and short: the ages and school years it suits, and what it isn't built to do.

Ages 4 to 12

Phonogram Fun is designed for children aged 4 to 12. Most families start when the first spelling list comes home, usually in Year 1 (around age 6 to 7). Four- and five-year-olds begin with the 70-phonogram chart, flash cards and Sound Play, and older children use it for weekly spelling lists, revision and harder words.

School years

  • Australia: Prep, Kindy or Foundation (the first year of school) to Year 6.
  • England and the UK: Reception to Year 6, including Year 1 phonics check practice and the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words.
  • United States: kindergarten to grade 6. The 70 phonograms apply to American English too, but the built-in word lists follow Australian and British school years, the voices are Australian or British, and spelling follows Australian and British conventions. US families mostly scan their own school list.

Who uses it

  • Parents who want the weekly spelling list practised without nightly repetition battles.
  • Homeschooling families who want an ordered, sounds-first path through all 70 phonograms.
  • Families preparing for the Year 1 phonics check, in England or Australia, using 12 real past papers.
  • Teachers and tutors who want a phonogram practice tool children will use at home.

What it is not the right tool for

  • Pre-readers under 4. The app assumes a child can sit for a few minutes and is starting to link letters with sounds. For toddlers, songs, rhymes and being read to matter more. See phonics for 2 and 3 year olds.
  • High-school vocabulary. The lists and games are built for primary-school spelling, not secondary English, academic vocabulary or exam preparation.
  • Languages other than English. It teaches English spelling only, with Australian or British voices.
  • Handwriting practice. Children spell by tapping and building words on screen. Dictation is written on paper, but the app does not teach or check letter formation.
  • A replacement for a speech pathologist or other specialist. Phonogram Fun is a structured phonics practice tool. It is not a diagnosis, an assessment or a therapy for dyslexia, speech or language difficulties, though many families use it alongside specialist support.

Not sure if it fits your child? The free version (one mission a day, the full phonogram chart, Sound Play and the word analyser) never expires, and Phonogram Fun Plus has a 7-day free trial. More answers are in the FAQ.
